An underglaze is like paint for pottery that goes on before the final top glaze. It adds colour or designs but typically stays matte and needs a clear glaze coat to make it shiny and food-safe.

Most traditional underglazes dry rough with a matte finish. This means that if you want your work to have a shiny ‘finished’ look you almost always have to apply clear Glaze over the top.

Ceramic Sauce Underglaze is designed to have a satin shiny finish! So unless you want your pieces to be food safe you can skip a whole step! Ceramic Sauce Underglaze is also extra special because it can be seamlessly applied to both bisqueware and greenware. It won’t bubble, crack, peel or build up like other yucky underglazes on the market!

It is SUPER important to note that because Ceramic Sauce is designed to SHINE! It puts them at risk of melting to the kiln shelf if the bottom of your vessel is painted. So if you pop Ceramic Sauce on any parts of your piece that will touch a kiln shelf they might melt and stick… which basically means RIP to your beautiful vessel.

"Cones" refer to specific temperatures in the kiln, measured with ceramic pieces (that are shaped like literal cones) that melt at precise temperatures.

They matter because they help kiln tech’s know exactly when the clay or glaze reaches the right hardness or finish during firing.

You will never have to muck around with cones yourself, but you often need to match the type of clay you’re using with a compatible glaze. Obvs Crockd’s clays and glazes are all compatible! But if you have clay from elsewhere (so blasphemous!) then you will need to know this.

Ceramic Sauce Underglaze can be applied to both greenware (clay that’s air dried but hasn’t been kiln-fired) and bisqued pottery (pottery that’s been kiln-fired once).

• For Bisqued Pottery (like the pieces in our Pottery Painting Kit): Start by sketching your design lightly with a pencil. Then, apply Ceramic Sauce like you would paint!
• 1-2 coats: gives a watercolor effect.
• 3 coats: dries bold and opaque.
• For Greenware Pottery: Repeat the same steps but minus the pencil!

Once your Ceramic Sauce is dry to the touch, apply 2 coats of Clear Stuff to make your piece food-safe and waterproof. This step is essential if you plan to use your pottery for food or drink!
